Veligandu Island: Moving Towards Environmental Sustainability
Dear Friends,
Sunny greetings from
Veligandu Island Resort & Spa!
Welcome to July’s edition of the monthly updates from your favorite Island in the Maldives.
Let me take this opportunity to share some of the highlights of June 2018.
June 5, is marked by the United Nations as
World Environment Day. In order to promote the awareness among our team members and guests, as well as to encourage to action and support the effort that really matters, we dedicated the whole month of June to immersive environmental activities.
Our stunning lagoon is “home” to many sea creatures, it is truly mesmerizing, and it is our responsibility to keep this “home” healthy, clean and comfortable for its habitants and marine life. Our team organized a reef clean up to remove marine debris, which are often brought by the currents. We encourage all team members to live in harmony with nature and be a part of solution by participating in marine conservation activities.
One of the land-based activities held in June is
coconut tree planting. We protect the Island’s native plants, and our amazing team of gardeners nurture many indigenous and tropical plants. As a result, we are surrounded by abundance of coconut palms, blooming orchids and frangipanis and lush greeneries. This June, we decided to support our team of gardeners by inviting our guests to plant coconut trees along the Island pathways. While creating a living memory of the holiday, it also helped to make the Island greener, and I am sure it is so encouraging to feel that you make a difference, even while on holiday.
I am thrilled to share with you one of the greatest achievement of the month of June, which is replacing plastic straws with an
eco-friendly alternative – paper straws. Many plastic straws end up in our ocean, polluting water and harming sea life. Replacing plastic straws is only one of the strides we take to bring us closer to a plastic-free Island. The next big project that we have been working on is to reduce or stop using plastic bottles and bags around Veligandu. We will share the progress with you in the next monthly update.
A lot more activities are planned for the upcoming month of July and the rest of the year 2018. Stay tuned for more exciting news from our gorgeous Island.
